My mom, Luz, as most of you already know, is 96 years old. She reads a lot and is still very sharp for her advanced age. She has seen quite a few amazing things in her lifetime and still tells stories of listening to music on the first radio her family owned and being in awe of the sound traveling through the air.
She is still a little wide-eyed when it comes to understanding how a computer works, let alone the internet.
One day, I overheard her explaining to my 99 year old Tio Fernando about these two know-it-alls: Cuco and Yayo who have a giant net where they accumulate information.
Wait....Cuco and Yayo? She's talking about Google and Yahoo. (In Spanish, of course.)
I swear, I can't make this stuff up.
You may want to get some popcorn for this. Enjoy.

Priceless! There is nothing in this world like our Cuban viejitos. Thanks for bringing back memories of my beloved parents and abuelita.

Me encanta! Is she talking about the Yahoo gnomes? Los enanitos?
Posted by: Annie | April 12, 2010 at 10:07 AM
Annie,
Yes! Enanitos. (That's my favorite part, too.) =D

Ay, yay yay! Thank you for brightening an otherwise kind of dreary day! She reminds me of my grandmother Lelita. Cuco y Yayo...I love it!

Que Bella!! God bless her, she is a gem. Can I borrow her?

Marta, this is priceless. Being Cuban myself, I totally get the lingo. Your mom reminds me soooo much of my dear grandmother. She was my best friend and confidant. Sadly, she passed away in 2007 at the "prime" age of 78. I miss her dearly.
Thanks for sharing this clip of your Mom.... I truly loved and enjoyed it. It made me laugh.... alot. I still talk about it and have shared it with my family.

My grandmother Leonor used to called "piriways" the L.A. Freeways!

Priceless!! It took me back a few years to experiences we (our family) had with my parents. My Dad lived to 93 and my Mom to 100. They were also "leidos y escribidos", but there was still a cultural gap.

Congrats on going viral! You should record her reaction as you to explain her video going viral, in net talk!
Your mom looks adorable explaining this-- even though I do NOT understand a word! Geesh, I knew should have payed more attention in Spanish class! Some day you are going to have to translate this for me♥

I have watched this twice now and love that you have this adorable video of your beautiful Mother. I regret to say that my grasp of Spanish has slipped since the days when I attempted to explain things to my patients in Hollywood and downtown L.A. I think I caught that she said you could push a button, ask a question, and eventually someone/something would answer. That sums up my understanding of the Internet, too!
