The Look

When he was little, he would give me a Look.

The Look could melt my heart in an instant.

The Look would wonder, "Am I in trouble?"

Or the Look would happily say, "Yes!" in answer to my silent offer of food or a gift.

He had a Look of Absolute Joy.

And a Look of Abject Terror.

The Look began the day he was born. I remember the doctor commenting, "You can tell this one is really smart. Check out that Look he's giving you."

It's taken 15 years, and he's completely perfected the I-can-totally-pull-this-off-and-lucky-for-me-I'm-so-cute Look.

It seems that for the past 15 years, since that kid was born, there's never been a dull moment around here. *sigh*

The "Pamagranate" I love edible gifts. I do. Lucky for me, I have lots of friends and family who bake many wonderful things at Christmastime. My friend, Debbie makes the most delicious and beautiful pizelle (Italian waffle) cookies as gifts. Eric's grandmother makes incredible peanut butter balls. And we can always count on Eric's Aunt Rita for her famous and to-die-for homemade English Toffee. Every year I look forward to receiving their gifts. (I hope they look forward to getting their annual bottle of creme de vie from me, but that's not important right now.) One of the most special that we all look forward to receiving each year is the Pamagranate Jelly. It's made from pomegranate juice, but it's made my by BFF, Pam. So we naturally named it Pamagranate Jelly. (See how clever we are?) This year, because I was in a tag-designing mood, I designed some tags for Pam...

Almost 50 years. My dad passed away on December 11th, 1999. He and my mom would have celebrated their 60th anniversary just 3 weeks later on December 31st. To this day, when asked how long they were married, my mom will always answer, "Casi 60 años." Translation: "Almost 60 years." It's as if she feels like she's lying to just say 60 years. She has to add the "casi." Almost. Every December 31st she gets phone calls from old friends and extended family. No one forgets that my parents were married on New Year's Eve. But December will always be bittersweet. December will always have that "almost" attached to it. On March 3rd of this year, my daughter, Amy Kikita took my father's ashes and scattered them in Pinar del Rio, keeping a promise I had made to him so many years ago. She wisely chose a very specific and easily identifiable spot...
