I've got all this great Happy New Year energy going right now and I have so many stories to tell and I'm going to San Francisco next week to visit Pixar and Skywalker Ranch. I just feel like I want to share the love and happy vibes.
If you were in my town, I'd say, "Hey, come over for dinner. I'll cook you something Cuban." But since that's not likely to happen, how about I just do a Happy New Year Cuban Food (Poster) Giveaway?
Yes. I think it's a wonderful idea.
If you were coming to dinner, I would be torn. What to serve? Check out this poster and just try to make a decision.
Because I look at this one every day in my kitchen, I think I'm going to try to master the art of making Pan Cubano. (See? It's not just cool looking. It's motivational, too.)
So much Cuban food. So little time. *sigh*
I'm going to be giving away Three (3) Cuban Food Posters to 3 lucky winners.
Each 16"x20" poster is unmounted and printed on heavy duty premium luster paper with archival fade-resistant inks.
It looks just like the photo above. Black background with white lettering and some distressing for an aged texture.
To enter the drawing for a chance to win one of the 3 posters, please leave me a comment on this post and tell me...
- What's your favorite comfort food? (I'd have to go with picadillo, myself.)
- Who makes it the very best? (Your mami? Tia Cuca? El Palacio de los Jugos?)
Leave one comment only, please!
Remember that if you want to enter the drawing for the poster, you must leave a comment on this post and I'll choose THREE winners on Wednesday, January 14th at 11:00 am PST.
Gracias and Buen Provecho!
If you're the impatient type (and you know who you are), my posters are for sale over at my Etsy shop: Marta Maria Designs. the 16"x20" is only $21.00 plus shipping and handling.
I also have a larger size (20"x30") and one (16"x20") on canvas, but that's not important right now.
Buena Suerte and Happy New Year!
My fav comfort food is Ropa Vieja, which I loved the way my Mom made it,I loved the next day, she use to make Ropa Vieja Flautas for lunch which of course only a Cuban Cali will do, but since she is no longer with us,

My favorite Cuban comfort food is potaje de chicharo! My mother-in-law Sofia makes this split pea soup that is delicious, and never the same. She adds whatever she has on hand; sometimes ham, sometimes chorizo, sometimes pork. That makes it all the better and you never know what you're going to get.

my dear late abuela dulce maria made the best picadillo in our family...luckily she taught me how to make it just like hers and I taught my daughter-in-law so my nietecito y nietecita can enjoy this cubanisimo dish any time they like! You see I live in Connecticut and they live in Florida....but a pesar de la distancia...

Martica, I have to say picadillo has to be my favorite. I make it with turkey meat since we don't eat red meat. Is everyone's favorite at home. We eat it with congri and salad. On special occasions, I will fry some platanos maduros. Delicioso! Un abrazo,

Hi Marta! My favorite Cuban food is the same as yours: PICADILLO (con arroz blanco y platanitos maduros). When I was a little kid, growing up in Miami, My family couldn't afford to go out to restaurants very often. But I remember one particular time when we did and I couldn't read the menu so I ordered Picadillo. Everybody at the table laughed at me. First, because apparently (according to them) it was uncool to order that at a restaurant. But mostly, because we were at a Chinese restaurant. Whatever...

Arroz con pollo. My grandmother (father's mother) doesn't make it the tastiest, but for some reason it's so good. It remind me of being a kid. She always serves it with tomato and avocado salad and extra olive oil to pour on rice. It's always comforting to be in their cozy apartment.

My favorite comfort food is pure de malanga. My mom would make it for me but now I buy it at Isla Canarias the bakery side.
Posted by: Patty DeFalco | January 10, 2015 at 06:33 AM
My favorite is guayana con quest cream! My grandmother would prepare it every afternoon after school snack. I was the youngest of the Pedro Pan children that arrived from Cuba at the tender age of 1yr 10 moths and I long and hold on to every tradition in hopes that one day I will get to visit my Cuba! I would so much love to have this poster in my home to pass down to my grandchildren.

Sure there are many dishes that, when made with love and passion, comfort me. Arroz con pollo, congri’, yucca, tostones, some have even mentioned malanga. And I would agree, 100%, if it wasn’t for the one dish that makes all of those just “food” when compared to my favorite and most comforting that the Cuban kitchen has to offer.
Pan con mantequilla y café con leche. Period.
The way the butter pools in the basins of the bread between the crust and the miga. The way the butter rises and acts like a protective layer on the surface of your café con leche – protective in the sense that you are ensured butter in every bite. If you are fortunate enough to be left with just enough leche and just enough pan… you take that piece of buttered bread and push it to the bottom of your mug and soak up the remaining milk. I would inevitably hear:
“¡Nino! ¡Usa la cuchara!”
That is comfort. A reminder that times were easier once. A reminder that as soon as I was done with my desayuno Cubano I could go out and play.
I forget to put out the cuchara every once in a while.

Comfort food: bistec empanizado con arroz blanco (I dream of it!) Unfortunately, I haven't learned how to cook it correctly. Mi tía Cari bistec empanizado is to die for! Haven't had it in years since she lives in Miami and I'm in Panama City:(

Marta I love your blog. My favorite comfort food is Arroz con Huevo Frito and a platanito manzano. My mom's was the best, her fried eggs would always have a crunchy crust around it. She would always make it for me. I miss it very much, she passed away 6 months ago unexpectedly. She would have loved this poster for her kitchen. Thank you for the opportunity.

You have my all-time comfort food items all lined up on your subway poster: arroz blanco, picadillo and frijoles negros ( a few platanitos maduros wouldn't hurt.) Of course, I too believe my Mami makes the best of all three.
(I have bought your cuban food subway poster for both of my boys and I too would love to have one.)

So about a week or so ago I came across a picture of this AMAZING poster on my Instagram feed and knew I had to have it! Unfortunately, it wasn't tagged or credited so I had no clue where to find it! I'm now sitting in my car (on my lunch break) googling "Cuban food wall art" and finally find your page! My fiancé and I are both Miami natives, born and raised. We moved to Austin, TX almost 2 years ago for school and while we are enjoying all a new state has to offer, we can't wait to move back. I miss the variety of foods Miami has to offer most of all! I'm Cuban/Colombian and very proud of it. It's hard for me to pick a favorite meal but if I had to I'd go with una crema de malanga como aperitivo, un bistec empanizado con yuca hervida (and mojo!) como plato principal, y lo terminaria with a homemade arroz con leche como el que hace mi abuela!
Goes without saying but I would absolutely LOVE to win this poster. It's getting hung in our apartment either way!
PS: I considered ordering it ASAP and falling into the "impatient type" category :P but figured I'd try my luck first.

I'm with you Marta, Picadillo con arroz blanco makes me feel all cozy inside. My mom made it the best, but now I have taken the torch with pride since she had a surgery several years ago that left her physically and mentally disabled. Talking with her about old Cuban recipes seems to bring her back to me just a little bit. She was my last link to all things Cuban, so your blog has been a God send!! I have to say I make a mean Flan too. :)
Muchos carinos!!

My Cuban comfort food is pastelitos de guayaba/empanaditas de guayaba. Sometimes I need a LOT of comfort. :)

Para mi has to be un buen ajiaco echo por mi Madre. Nose si son los condimentos o el amor con que ella lo hace. Simplemente siempre me recuerda a mi ninez en Cuba.
